Does Mitt Romney, the republican presidential candidate, really believe in Joseph Smith's golden plates?

I once told a friend of mine that he and I agreed on so many points up to but not including the Book of Mormon or Joseph Smiths dreams. At that point, I had no idea how offensive this was or I would have never said it because my friend is a very nice guy. Point being, the Joseph Smith dreams are the whole basis of the Mormon belief system.
